Architecture in Chandler

I was recently commissioned to photograph the modern architecture around Chandler, Arizona. Over the course of a few days I was able to capture images that represent some of the great examples in Chandler.

The Chandler City Hall is a low- to mid-rise government complex spanning two city blocks in downtown Chandler, bordered by Arizona Avenue to the east and Washington Street to the west, with Chicago Street dividing the development. The northern block features a 5-story office tower at its north end, housing city departments, and one-story buildings along Arizona Avenue and Washington Street, which include an art gallery, council chambers, and a television studio. The southern block consists of one-story buildings with a neighborhood redevelopment office and a print center, alongside a two-level parking structure.

The project had two main objectives: first, to create a unified community identity by consolidating city departments, previously scattered across leased spaces, into a single facility to foster civic pride; second, to rejuvenate the historic downtown by developing an underutilized and neglected area, encouraging future community-focused development in the city center.

When photographing Chandler City Hall, I aimed to highlight the building’s distinctive integrated lighting. To achieve this, I chose to shoot during the blue hour, just after sunset, when the lighting would be most striking. A key goal in my architectural photography is to provide a sense of scale, helping viewers grasp the size of the structure or space. I often accomplish this by including people or cars in the frame, as these familiar elements allow viewers to easily gauge the building’s proportions.

Another great example of modern architecture showcased in Chandler was the Chandler-Gilbert Community College, specifically the Ironwood Hall and Student Activity Center.

Photographing Chandler Gilbert Community College Pecos campus offers a unique opportunity to capture a blend of modern architecture and vibrant student life. The campus features clean lines and open spaces that provide excellent natural lighting for both daytime and early evening shots. From wide-angle views of the main academic buildings to detailed close-ups of outdoor study areas and landscaping, the environment supports a variety of photographic styles. Additionally, the presence of students engaged in collaborative learning and campus activities adds an authentic and dynamic element to any photo series. I wanted to make sure to showcase the vibrate colors of the campus.
